Miss Daisy XXI

January 2023 - May 2023

Miss Daisy XXI was designed to complete the 2023 FRC challenge: Charged Up. In this season, robots were tasked with acquiring and placing small traffic cones and inflatable cubes in designated scoring locations.

Wrist

This wrist was capable of actuating 7.8 lbs end effector while providing accurate position feedback and maintaining position without excessive current draw through the integration of an absolute encoder and piston actuated locking "comb" which prevented unwanted rotation as a result of the extremely large end effector. As the end effector continued to gain weight through the design process, it was found a high gear ratio on the wrist actuating motor was insufficient to prevent backdriving. As such, a linkage which interfaced with the gear teeth of the wrist allowed a robust mechanism which did not require discrete positions to lock.

Telescoping Arm

To reach further scoring positions, I helped design a belt driven telescopic arm capable of extending from 28" to 46" in length. This arm operated by running a timing belt along the length of the inner tube which could then be driven a pulley powered by a gearbox mounted on the outer tube.
